Yesterday Dior staged its Cruise 2017 show in the grand Blenheim Palace, with hundreds of immaculately dressed guests arriving in their front-row finery at the sleepy Charlbury station in Oxfordshire on the Orient Express (or as Alexa Chung christened it, the Diorient Express). The stars on the front row, including Alexa Chung, Kate Beckinsale and Bianca Jagger, were- as you might expect- dressed in head to toe Dior, but each gave their own styling spin to their looks meaning there were plenty of lessons to take away, even if your wardrobe is more Zara than Dior...
Pair boots with your party dress
Alexa Chung showed how sequins can look practical for a rainy day, pairing her Dior heavily-embellished mini dress with a navy pea coat and chunky lace-up patent boots, with sensible white ankle socks peeking out over the top. Chung shows how a bare leg and winter boots is a way to get around this week's downpours, because nothing is more miserable than sandals + puddles.
Cut-outs can be classically grown-up
Dress: gold bridesmaid dresses
Kate Beckinsale wore the most traditionally 'Dior' look at the Cruise show, opting for a couture dress with a full ankle-skimming skirt. While you might think that cut-out party dresses are saved for the Snapchat generation, the 42-year-old actress proved that an unexpected flash of skin at the waist can be elegant, modern and very wearable.
Layer a printed jumper over your little white dress
It's a general rule that it isn't a good idea to wear a little white dress in grim weather, but the Man Repeller's Leandra Medine layered a navy jumper with white detailing over her white Dior dress to make it a little more rain-appropriate. Patterned, textured, stripey and sparkly socks are having a moment this season so Medine was on the money in her baby pink ankle socks which clashed with her red and white contrasting pumps.
Bianca Jagger makes a case for a printed, silk scarf
Forever chic, Bianca Jagger wore a head-to-toe white look, with a sharp ivory blazer, cream camisole and floaty midi skirt. She brightened up the classic ensemble- which recalled the famous white suit she once wore to wed Mick Jagger- with an aqua structured Dior handbag and a colourful printed neckerchief. See our guide to finding the perfect silk scarf here.
If you have to wear a coat, make it sleeveless
Nobody wants to wear their winter coat in June (yes, it IS June now), and Caroline Issa shows that layering a sleeveless jacket over a sleeved dress is the perfect alternative. Like Alexa Chung, she also opted for the bare leg and ankle boot combo.
Elena Perminova shows how to wear a t-shirt to work
At the Dior pub the evening before the show, Elena Perminova became our new workwear pin up in a white t shirt with rolled up sleeves and a black structured pencil skirt and pumps. When the rest of your look is super-polished, you can get away with one relaxed piece, so long as it's perfectly proportioned.
